Can You Reverse Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, more commonly referred to as gum disease, is more common than you think. Almost half of adults over the age of 30 have some form of it. And it can happen more easily if you don’t have regular checkups with your dental professional.

It is caused by a buildup of excess plaque and tartar on the teeth. The resulting bacteria seep into the gums and cause problems. Some common effects are gum bleeding, gum soreness, and pain. If left untreated it can eventually cause tooth and bone loss.

Can Gum Disease Be Corrected?

If detected early enough, gum disease can be reversed. The key is knowing the symptoms of the beginning stages so your dentist can advise the proper treatment.

The signs of early gum disease or gingivitis are:

  •       Pain – if you notice discomfort or even pain while brushing your teeth or eating, this could be a sign to watch. As you inspect your gums in the mirror do you notice swelling, redness, or receding? These are also telltale signs of gingivitis.
  •       Lax Dental Hygiene – if you don’t brush and floss regularly you could begin to see a buildup of a yellowy paste on your teeth. This is plaque and it is one of the leading causes of gum disease.
  •       Smoking – If you are a smoker you are particularly susceptible. Make sure you visit your dentist for checkups twice a year.
