What are the Different Types of Dental Implants?
When most people consider the option of implants to correct missing, discolored, or damaged teeth, they don’t realize how many different kinds of dental implants there are to choose from. Everyone is different and there are many modern implant options to fit your unique dental needs.
When beginning your implant journey, the first step is assessment. Your dental professional will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and jaw bone to determine which of the following 4 options suits you best.
The Four Most Common Types of Dental Implants
- 2-Stage – This has been the most common type and probably what you imagine you’ll receive. But that’s not necessarily so. This type involves surgery to put the implants directly into the jaw bone. That’s the first step. After a few months of healing, you return to have the tooth section added to the surgically-implanted screws.
- Endosteal – These are implanted in much the same way as the 2-stage implants and are used to replace dentures or bridges.
- Single-Stage – This procedure is the streamlined version of the 2-stage. During surgical implantation of the screws into the jawbone, the top part is left exposed so that when you return to have the tooth section added a second surgery to expose the screws is unnecessary.
- Subperiosteal – These are the types of implants most commonly used during a single-stage implant procedure and are specifically crafted to be exposed at the top during healing.
